About the Artist
Jim Hake approaches all subject matter with sensitivity, humour and a sense of nostalgia. Themes of memory and communication are prevalent in Hake’s sculptures and installations, with layered imagery, coded text and patterning playing to the curiosity of the viewer. Although Hake primarily works in clay and porcelain, he also incorporates a variety of materials into his art, including wood, metal, plaster and glass. Jim Hake received his BFA in sculpture at the Maryland Institute, College of Art. During this period he also studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Hake worked as an artist in residence at Millersville University, Pennsylvania and The Carving Studio, Vermont. He received his MA in sculpture at the California State University, Sacramento in 1994 and a MFA in sculpture at the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington in 1996. Hake has worked as a teacher and sculptor, showing work throughout Italy and Europe, specifically Milan, Bologna, Venice, Lugano, Stockholm and London.
