Xiaojing Yan will be presenting a series of new work in her upcoming solo exhibition at Lonsdale Gallery. This will be accompanied by a retrospective of Yan’s earlier works on the upper level of the gallery and will be on view August 18 – September 28, 2014.
A major publication that will feature a collection of Yan’s work to date is in production.

Bridge (2009) by Xiaojing Yan was recently on view at British Columbia’s Surrey Art Gallery, as the high-profile exhibition Da bao (Takeout) toured across Canada.
Bridge is made of over 700 ceramic soup spoons—like much of her work, this installation relies on the precision and patience of the artist.
Xiaojin Yan‘s sculpture and installation practice develops around her perspective on identity, history and communication as they relate to an artist working between two cultures. Yan’s work passes through the complex filters of different countries, languages, and cultural expectations. Her aesthetic employs traditional Chinese materials and techniques, which are reinvented though the lens of contemporary installation art developed primarily in the West.
Da Bao (Takeout) is curated by Shannon Anderson (Toronto) and Doug Lewis (Beijing) . This group exhibition explores both the cross-cultural and social dynamic between China and the West—Canada in particular. The artwork on display in Da Bao engages the metaphor of fast-away food culture; it presents ironic, critical, and humorous perspectives on the import and export of culture, people, and ideas.
