Pedie Wolfond’s prolific artistic career spans over 50 years and has been built on a spirit of fearlessness and experimentation. Wolfond is an accomplished Canadian Abstract painter known for her immersive and expressive paintings. She embraces the artistic process; pouring all of its joys, exaltations, and challenges on to raw canvas. Her paintings surge with brilliant washes of colour. Diaphanous layers capture fleeting effects of light, interspersed with profound wells of stillness that captivate the mind and imagination.

In her new series of work, Wolfond seeks to instill feelings of hope and connectedness within the viewer, especially during this unusual time. The artist embarked on her new paintings in March 2020 while quarantined. Like many, she was deeply unsettled by all the unrest during this global pandemic. The genesis of this series can be seen as a form of catharsis and way of digesting the events in the world. Each day before beginning to paint, the artist actively meditates focusing on gratitude, manifesting positive energy that is infused into her paintings.

Wolfond brings her compositions to life using a soak-stain technique she developed in the 1970s of mixing acrylic paints with water and acrylic medium to create her own original pigments. Flooding the surface of the raw untreated canvas with luscious and vibrant hues, she combines bold gestural strokes with delicate veils of semi-translucent layers that arouse a sense of mystery. Audiences are invited to experience the feeling of wonder and connectedness found in Pedie Wolfond’s paintings. Her new body of work is a powerful reminder of the importance of hope and positivity in the face of adversity.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
PEDIE WOLFOND began her artistic career in the 1950s and has been actively exhibiting her work since the mid 1970s. Her paintings can be found in prestigious corporate and private collections in England, Israel, Belgium, France, Italy, Mexico, Australia, United States and Canada. She belongs to a generation of women artists, embarking on their careers during the rise of Abstract Expressionism, who had to assert their vision in a predominately male-dominated field. Like many of her female contemporaries during that period, her work remained at the periphery until years later. Now at the age of 83, Pedie Wolfond is recognized for her signature radiant energetic paintings and her contributions to the aesthetic language and processes of Colour Field painting in Canada.
