Liz Pead

Liz Pead’s upbringing in coastal New Brunswick left the artist with a lifelong connection to, and subsequent longing for, the landscape. Already an accomplished textile artist, Pead relocated to Toronto in 1999 to attend the Ontario College of Art and Design.  Working at the former alma mater of the Group of Seven, Pead became entrenched in researching nationalist visions of the Canadian landscape and its affect on our contemporary relationship to ecology.  Seeking to relate her own experiences of the land, the artist has undertaken many series using alternative materials, most notably recycled hockey equipment, to test and skew notions of representing our Canadian landscape. Liz Pead’s latest series are visions of the landscape rendered in thread on fine wire mesh supports. Working on this porous surface, the artist envokes a sense of temporality, these sketches giving a sense of memory or trace rather than a concrete idea of space. Somewhere between nostalgia and architectural grid, these sketches are the artists building blocks for a new terrain.
