Keijo Tapanainen is Finnish artist, currently living and working in Toronto. His carbon paper figures are as sensual as they are minimal. Tapanainen captures the beauty and simplicity of the human form in this intimate series of handcut carbon paper work. Figures are originally drawn from life using hand cut carbon paper pasted onto a kraft substrate. The artist renders his subjects using an almost sculptural reductive technique, cutting away elements to create a single composition. The elegant lines and sophistication of these images are juxtaposed with the textural surface of the carbon paper. The human figure is central to his practice. His work attempts to capture the nature of a human figure through subtle distinctions in the subject’s body language. As an artist, he is interested in creating works that are playful in nature and that address the idiomatic and the idiosyncratic. Tapanainen has exhibited his work across the Canada, the United States, and Europe.
