Lonsdale Gallery is pleased to present the work of emerging artist Allen Hirsh. This exhibition explores the construction and de-construction of painted wood sculptures. Through the composition of multiple wood blocks, Hirsh explores themes of self-discovery and growth. Each piece is unique as they house distinctive details, subtly coloured cuts and gouges, leading to deliberate construed imperfections and gaps. One is reminded of fragmented jigsaw puzzles, playfully responding to one another as patterns and images emerge from beneath the surface layers of colour, suggesting to the observer that life is not a complete story.
Hirsh conveys a sense of vulnerability, combined with an overall feeling of strength and optimism. This work portrays a strong constructivist influence, and the pieces often read as wooden quilts, as rich and compelling as their textile counterparts.
