September 11 – October 3, 2004
Opening Reception: Saturday September 11, 2004

Lonsdale Gallery is pleased to present a new body of work: “Bungee Jumping” by Philip Iverson. These inimitable drawings are a reflection of recent poetry Iverson has written.

In order to write visually, Iverson’s creative process envisions him bungee jumping into the edge of his subconscious, a dark moving ocean with a warm atmosphere. There he finds an object from his subconscious, varying from realistic to abstract, which he grasps and brings to the surface of his paper. Iverson sates: “At that point I am deciding, from gut reaction, if the object retrieved is unique or too repetitious a thought. If it is the latter I will take a sledgehammer and smash the object hard enough to crack it open and find a glowing surprise from within.”

The second element to Iverson’s creative process deals with the invasion of reasoning. Iverson believes he must strike out reasoning and continue to create a balanced composition of a visual poem or a dream where: “there is no beginning, there is no end. The image just is; and the story is always changing.”
