Lonsdale Gallery is pleased to present, Niche Species, a new solo exhibition by Phil Irish, featuring the artist’s latest series of digital prints, shown alongside with his painterly collages. Set in dramatic arctic ecosystems, this exhibition is an evocative response to environmental flux and our global climate reality. These works involved collaging in remote landscapes, in response to the environment and affected by the elements. Referencing the “web of life”, the artworks visualize patterns of connection and dependence.

” We are all looking at the world through frameworks. With varying degrees of awareness, we greet the world through an ever-shifting matrix of interpretation. While some lament that objectivity is unattainable, we might celebrate the way a robust and sensitive frame, or what Pierre Bourdieu calls a habitus, can serve by “correlating theory and practice, and enabling a deeper level of engagement with empirical reality.”

“ The act of framing the boundless landscape holds a decisive power. Gazing through the empty frame, at the landscape beyond, establishes a link of focus and attention between myself the land. The frame is an unseen apparatus that makes the interpretive work possible. It became clear, however, that the uniqueness of this frame – whether it slides in or out of view – is actually a meaning generator in the work.”
