OCTOBER 24-NOVEMBER 23, 2003

Lonsdale Gallery is pleased to present: About Face, a solo show of new large-scale portraiture work by Canadian artist Philip Iverson.

In this work Iverson strives to create a portrait that the viewer will see first and foremost for its presence, secondly for the projected facial landscape, and finally for the person, or the so-called subject of the portrait itself. On the same canvas he is also continuously intrigued by the relationships and interactions of seemingly unrelated objects. Iverson juxtaposes scenes of landscape and urban transportation against the face of the subject, with a belief that these interactions will encourage the viewer to instinctively make personal inferences as to the meaning of these large scale portraits. Painted in his signature style of strong expressionistic brushstrokes and radical colour, these intensely captivating images challenge the meaning of what a portrait represents.
